Background information

Translatory is a great new mobile and tablet poetry translation application for iOS and Android which has recently been released by Arc Publications, based in Lancashire in the north-west of England. Arc has published contemporary poetry from new and established writers from the UK and abroad for over 40 years, specialising in the work of international poets writing in English and the work of overseas poets in translation.

Supported using public funding from the Arts Council England, the 'Translatory' mobile and tablet application is designed for those with little or no experience of poetry translation, and is designed to give an insight into this fascinating field.

Below you can see a short video which introduces the iPad version of the application:

Application functionality

As you will see from the introductory video above, this application offers a great introduction to poetry translation. Upon opening the application, the user is presented with a screen offering a selection of world poetry.

From this screen, it is possible to select from a number of poems in various source languages, such as Polish, German, Catalan, and Finnish.

Arc promises there will be regular updates for this application, and it will be interesting to see new poems added to this list in the future. At the time of writing, there are 5 poems to choose from. All the poems are from titles published by Arc.

Upon selecting a poem for translation, the application displays the translation screen. This splits the lines of the poem into small segments, which can be clicked to display translation suggestions. It's also possible to add your own version by clicking 'write your own'.

There are a variety of suggested translations offered, which provides a great introduction to the subtleties of poetry translation for those who do not necessarily speak another language.

Any translations completed in the application are saved in the 'My Translations' section, which can be accessed from the menu.

From here you can also view the original poem or the published translation, or share your poem. These can also be deleted individually if required.

It is also possible to share your completed translations via applications such as Facebook and similar. You can even choose a background colour to best display your poem.

Since the launch of this application in March, Arc has implemented a much-requested new feature - the ability for the user to compare their finished translation with the published version. It is now possible to simply tap a translated poem to view the translation published by Arc, providing an interesting insight into subjective choices in translation.

Recommended for...

This application is great for anyone with an interest in poetry, language, and translation, regardless of their language skill level. It offers a fascinating insight into the world of poetry translation. It is also great for experienced translators, giving them an interesting opportunity to work with source texts outside of their usual language combinations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this is a very interesting application, and in my opinion is a pioneering approach by Arc Publications to increasing the popularity and visibility of poetry translation. It will be great to see what the future holds for this application in terms of additional content and features.
